The drug tretinoin is used to treat acne, it decreases the number and severity of pimples and promotes quick healing of those that do develop. It belongs to a group of medications called retinoids. It works by changing the way the skin cells grow and work. It is important to know that tretinoin may not be effective in certain skin conditions like rosacea, because it can increase the irritation and sensitivity of the skin. It also may be less effective if you have certain underlying skin conditions that can cause sensitivity like dryness or eczema.
This medication should be applied to clean, dry skin and not to cuts or scrapes. Wash the face first and then apply a small amount of medication (about the size of a pea) in a thin layer as directed by your doctor, usually once daily at bedtime. You can use a gauze pad, cotton swab, or your fingertip. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. This medication may be more effective when used in combination with a moisturizer.
It can take 8 to 12 weeks before you see results from this medication. Your skin might seem irritated or red during this time. This is normal. If your skin starts to feel burning, itching or scaly, stop using it and see your doctor.
